It’s All in Your Head!

By · Comments (21)

My clients are frequently asked…’so how have you done it’…when their friends see the amazing results they’ve achieved.

Their answer is very straight forward, they simply stuck to the plan, to which their friends reply…’oh, I wish I had your will power!’

This is a common miss-conception; that you need the will power of a warrior to make serious changes to your body…WRONG!

The difference between those who achieve their goals and those who don’t is down to one simple factor…they have the right MINDSET. You see, you could be given the best diet, training and supplement plan, but if your head isn’t in the ‘right place’ it’s completely pointless.

One technique, I use all the time myself, to help me stay ‘on the wagon’, is Positive Self Talk. This is the little voice inside your head that tells you that you CAN do it, rather than you can’t. For example, at the point when your workout is getting super hard and you have 30 seconds of squats left to go but you feel like giving in-then you use positive self talk, and tell yourself ‘c’mon you CAN do it’!

For me, self talk very often boils down to one question… ’Will this take me further to my goal or further away?’

For example, you have an outdoor training session at 6.15am, you wake up at 5.45am and can hear the rain on the window, its cold outside, you’re tired, and you think to yourself, ‘oh, I’ll just give it a miss today, I’ll definitely train tomorrow. It’s at this point you should be asking yourself, will this decision take me closer to or further away from my goal?

Another great question to ask yourself at times of weakness is…’how will I feel if I don’t achieve my goal?’

For example, if your goal is that in 28 days time, for your friend’s wedding, you want to get into the new dress you bought that you can’t quite zip up and have it fit comfortably, but you’re offered a slice of birthday cake at your cousin’s birthday party, just ask yourself how you will feel if in 28 days time you put the dress on and you can’t zip it up!

With the above examples in mind, I would encourage you to, as me and all my clients do, every time you’re faced with a decision that could affect you achieving goal, ask yourself…

WILL THIS TAKE ME CLOSER TO MY GOAL, OR FURTHER AWAY?

And…

HOW WILL I FEEL IF I DONT ACHIEVE MY GOAL?

Let’s make 2011 the year you GET the body you really want, rather than watching other people achieve it instead!

Homemade Salsa

By · Comments (55)

I went to see the 3rd film in the Meet The Fockers series at the cinema this weekend-definatly a must see!

I used my weekly ‘cheat meal’ at the cinema and had nachos and salsa, and it got me thinking…could I come up with a ‘clean’ alternative???

So I had a go and made my own homemade salsa…oh and its lush with rice cakes!

Salsa

Recipe (serves 4 people)
1/2 tin of chopped tomatos
2 tbl sp tomato puree
1 tsp of grated apple
1 handful of chopped spinach
sprinkle of sea salt
sprinkle of black pepper
sprinkle of chilli powder
sprinkle of thyme

The just stir it all up!

I’d love to hear what you think of it,

Katie xx

So here we are about to embark on a brand new year, maybe even starting to think about our new year resolutions, and with Wikipedia ranking improved health and weight loss as the most popular resolutions, it’s no surprise that gyms and health club chains experience their highest volume of sales in January.

Just picture the scene…

The festive period has come to an end and you feel fat, bloated and generally grey, yet fired up to make some dramatic changes to how you look in the mirror!

As if by magic your local gym knows this, and in fairy godmother style, has sent you a mail shot offering you January free when you sign up or a free pass for your pal if you join in the next 7 days.

Such deals excite you! The gym talks of shedding your Christmas flab using its many facilities… and you’re hooked. Its promise of a new body for a New Year fills you with confidence that these results will become reality…you will look like the air brushed gym bunny on the leaflet just by breathing health club air!

So you bite their hand off! You and your bags of motivation make great plans and commitments; you attend the gym every morning during your first week back to work and pound the treadmill with a true determination and fire in your belly…you have a clear goal…you will have a better body this time next year!

This passionate adherence continues for a few weeks until one of two things happen…

1. One morning you miss your alarm and sleep in or you’re tired after work and decide to ‘give it a miss just this once’. This ‘just once’ leads to ‘just twice’ and before you know it, ‘oops, you’ve missed a week!’ WHY? Because you are only accountable to yourself, the gym didn’t make an appointment with you, the group fitness class didn’t get cancelled ‘cos you weren’t there!

OR…

2. You dug out the dress you’d pictured yourself fitting back into as you sweated your balls of in the gym (yes I realise that generally those with balls don’t usually wear dresses), and to your disappointment, it nowhere near fits! In short, you didn’t get the results you wanted, you don’t look like the air brushed gym bunny on the leaflet and you ask yourself ‘why am I busting my balls for nothing’, lose your motivation and hardly go back. You lose and the gym wins the best kind of member; one who pays and doesn’t go!

So where did it all go wrong?

• The gym offers no accountability, no support and little encouragement. We are only human after all; we need motivation, love and support!

The Solution: Ditch the gym (they probably won’t notice if you gain 10 stone, poo a pound, do 50 classes a week or do one a fortnight), instead opt for a class, personal trainer, or course of sessions like a boot camp! All of these gym alternatives offer the support of either a trainer or fellow participants, all of which you actively make yourself accountable to, e.g. ‘Oh I said I’d meet Katie at class, I can’t drop her in it’ or ‘My trainer is going to be measuring me next week, I better get my ass to the gym’, and all are there to motivate you!

• There was no realistic, time related goal!
The Solution: Set a goal that is super specific and realistic and has a definitive date, and this can work for any area of your life, e.g. By January 30th 2011, I will have lost 5cms from my waist.

So you’ve read this and already started thinking about what your goal might be (hopefully), and may have contemplated one of the gym alternatives I mentioned earlier, but how do you know you’re making the right choice, and how do you spot a good gym alternative from a bad one?

A good trainer will:
• Have testimonials with before and after pictures of previous clients
• Ask you lots of questions about yourself and not spend your first meeting telling you about how they’ve done this course and that course and are the highest qualified PT ever! (Of course they should be properly qualified and insured but the clue is in the title…PERSONAL training)
• Constantly update their knowledge and your programs

A good class/class instructor will:
• Regularly change their class content and offer modifications where necessary to meet the needs of their class
• Take an interest in you, even if that just means remembering your name out of a class of 40 people
• Be able to tell you the benefits and the why’s
• Admit if they don’t know the answer to something instead of bullshitting you. Instead they’ll go off and find the answer for you for next time
• Keep updating their knowledge as well as updating you on new classes etc

A good course or boot camp should be an awesome mix of all of the above!

I hope you’ve found this article helpful, and have pointed you in the best direction to help YOU achieve your 2011 goals!

Wishing you the best of health in 2011,
Katie xx
